What is HGTV Dream Home Giveaway?
Table of Contents
The HGTV Dream Home Giveaway is an annual sweepstake of the Scripps Network’s Home and Garden television channel, running since 1997. Every year, HGTV uses a series of HGTV Dream Home television specials to showcase a grand home that their experts have created, then give it away. Dream Home winners receive prize packages including a home, cash, a car and a grand total of between one and three million dollars!
Since its 1997 conception, the HGTV Dream Home Sweepstakes has since evolved into one of America’s largest and most popular giveaways. How many people usually enter? This number has increased every year till now. In 1998, 2.5 million entries were received, but the 2016 HGTV Dream Home winner was chosen from 127 million entries!
Winning the HGTV Dream Home Might Be More Like a Nightmare
Winning the HGTV Dream Home Sweepstakes feels like a total dream come true.
This year, for example, the winner of this popular competition will receive a stunning waterfall home on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, Wayfarer’s gorgeous new furniture, a new Honda Passport SUV, and $ 250,000 cash. It seems like the ultimate prize package that anyone would love. Except a few winners have felt that winning the HGTV Dream Home has broken it all.
The only thing that is worse than not winning the competition is winning and then being forced to leave home and lose that money. This sounds shocking, but in fact, very few Dream Home winners hold properties. It really makes you wonder if winning HGTV Dream Home is less like a dream and more like a nightmare.
Winning the HGTV dream home is life-changing
Winning the sweepstakes, good or bad, is definitely transformational. Feinbaum Country Living said, “Winning one of these homes is life-changing in that recipient either has to pick up and carry their things or they suddenly have a big savings account.” “The outcome depends on the individual winner, but the overreaching theme is that if you win, it’s life-changing.”
It seems that if you are lucky enough to win, then you need to make the first call to your financial planner or accountant. And if you are not already rich, you do not expect to move directly to HGTV Dream Home 2020. It may look very beautiful on television, but it is a beast to hold onto!

2019 HGTV Dream Home Winner – Whitefish Montana
For the 2019 Dream Home, HGTV chose a mountain retreat in Whitefish, Montana. The house was built from scratch for 2019 giveaway and was designed by HGTV Pro Brian Patrick Flynn.
Intentionally blurred the lines between indoor and outdoor living space to take full advantage of the stunning views of whitefish in 2019.
Winners of 2019 HGTV Dream Home:
- The lucky winner of the 2019 Dream Home was Beverly Fulkerson of Indiana. HGTV attracted Beverly’s name from more than 135 million other entries.
- Like many winners, Beverly has been entering for years with no one expecting that he is in fact the lucky one to have drawn his name. HGTV’s 2019 Winner Announcement said that she enters about twice every day since 1998.
- Beverly thought her family had gathered to take home a prize that one of her granddaughters had found when she was ambushed by HGTV’s Tiffany Brooks. You can watch the entire 2019 Dream Home Ambush on YouTube.
What do Dream Home Sweepstakes winners get?
Each year’s HGTV Dream Home Sweepstakes winner receives indoors, indoors artwork and furnishings, a large cash prize and a new vehicle. Sometimes, additional rewards are also included, like a dog’s indigenous pet or a new boat for waterfront properties.
The total prize value regularly reaches $ 2 million or more.
In a few years, the winner is offering the option of choosing a cash prize instead of occupying the Dream Home himself. If the winner chooses this option, they receive related prizes such as vehicles, cash and goods, but HGTV retains the rights to the house. Usually, they sell the house to the private bidder.
Why Does not HGTV Give Away an Affordable Dream Home?
HGTV gives a fabulous home every year as a grand prize at the HGTV Dream Home Sweepstakes. It is a one-time lifetime award, which includes a custom-built or lovingly renovated home in a stunning location and landscaping, upholstery, cash, a vehicle, and more, typically priced at over a million dollars.
Now, this is a wonderfully cheap route, but it has one drawback. If you win, you will have to pay taxes on your Dream Home award. And the taxes on an award with such high ARVs are heavy.
At the time of this writing, no winner has been able to keep their dream home permanently. The 2005 winner Don Cruz tried to stay and live in the house, but they went bankrupt in the process (although he said the experience was worth the uproar). Higher taxes either sold out quickly to every other winner or took the cash option.
Now, selling or taking cash options is not a bad thing; Winners have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of money and have an amazing experience to boot. But selling a house is a hopeless idea for those who are imagining themselves enjoying all the luxuries of a beautiful home that they are watching on TV and online in a photo tour.
